What happened
During a nighttime arrival at Tehran-Mehrabad Airport, an aircraft traveling from Kish Island experienced a runway excursion following its landing on runway 29L. After the aircraft made contact with the runway, it encountered mechanical issues that prevented it from decelerating sufficiently within the available runway length.
As a result of the inability to stop, the aircraft exited the runway surface and descended down an embankment. The aircraft eventually came to a halt in the Kan River canal, situated approximately 200 metres from the threshold of runway 11R. The impact caused significant structural damage, including the loss of the entire undercarriage and the separation of the number three engine. The aircraft was subsequently declared a total loss.
Findings
- The incident resulted in three fatalities and 50 injuries.
- The primary factor in the excursion was technical difficulties encountered immediately after touchdown.
