What happened
On June 2, 1990, a Markair, Inc. flight operating from Anchorage International Airport was conducting a localizer approach to runway 14 at Unalakleet, Alaska. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-2X6C with registration N670MA, was flying under instrument flight rules due to prevailing instrument meteorological conditions. During the approach phase, the aircraft impacted the ground approximately 7.5 miles before reaching the runway threshold.
There were no passengers on the flight at the time of the accident. The crew and cabin staff consisted of the captain, the first officer, and two flight attendants. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. Regarding injuries, the captain, the first officer, and one flight attendant suffered minor injuries, while the second flight attendant sustained serious injuries.
Findings
At the time of the accident, the flight was operating under FAR Part 121 regulations. The aircraft was operating in instrument meteorological conditions during its final approach to the destination.
