What happened
The incident involved a military aircraft operating out of Hamilton-Kindley Field. The crew was conducting a reconnaissance mission when the situation deteriorated during flight. While traveling approximately 25 miles west of St George's Island, the airplane experienced a mechanical issue that led to a loss of power. Following this event, the pilot was unable to maintain control of the aircraft. The plane subsequently descended and impacted the water surface. All 11 individuals on board were killed in the crash. The crew consisted of personnel assigned to the 373rd Reconnaissance Squadron.
Findings
The official investigation identified the primary factor leading to the accident as an engine failure. This mechanical malfunction resulted in the loss of control and the subsequent impact with the sea.
