Aircraft overrun at Mokhotlong Airport

No fatalities • Mokhotlong, Lesotho • Landing (descent or approach)

A flight arriving from Maseru overran the runway at Mokhotlong Airport, resulting in the destruction of the aircraft but no injuries.

What happened

During an approach to Mokhotlong Airport following a routine flight from Maseru, the crew of the aircraft experienced a runway excursion. The landing sequence began with the left main landing gear contacting the surface approximately 200 metres beyond the runway threshold, followed shortly by the right main gear.

Because the gravel runway at the destination measures only 700 metres in length, the aircraft could not decelerate sufficiently before the end of the paved surface. The aircraft continued past the runway boundary and eventually came to a stop after colliding with a residential structure located roughly 100 metres from the runway exit.

Findings

  • All 13 occupants on board the aircraft managed to exit the wreckage without sustaining any injuries.
  • Although there were no casualties, the impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft.

Probable cause

The aircraft was unable to stop within the limited length of the gravel runway, leading to an overrun and collision with a building.
