No fatalities • Santa Cilia, Spain • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft operating for the 35th Aerial Unit overran the runway and entered a wooded area during a military exercise, resulting in minor injuries to all occupants.

What happened

During the execution of the ECCArulence2019 exercise, an aircraft operated by the Air Force's Aerial Evacuation Unit was conducting a mission on behalf of the 35th Aerial Unit from Getafe AFB. The flight was transporting a crew of four along with six passengers when it approached runway 27.

Upon making contact with the 850-meter runway, the aircraft experienced two bounces before a firm touchdown occurred. Following this landing, the plane drifted toward the right side of the runway and collided with a concrete taxiway located near the northern apron. The momentum of the aircraft prevented it from stopping within the runway limits, leading to a runway excursion. The aircraft eventually exited the paved surface, struck several trees, and came to a halt in a nearby wooded area.

Findings

  • The aircraft experienced an unstable landing characterized by multiple bounces.
  • The aircraft veered off the runway centerline and struck a taxiway during the landing roll.
  • All 10 occupants sustained slight injuries during the incident but were successfully evacuated from the wreckage.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered off the runway and overran the pavement after a bouncing landing.
