What happened
During an arrival at Belize City-Sir Barry Bowen Municipal Airport, a single-engine aircraft experienced an overrun following its touchdown. The incident occurred while the aircraft was operating under marginal weather conditions. After landing, the pilot was unable to decelerate the plane sufficiently to remain on the runway surface.
As the aircraft exited the paved area, the right main landing gear was lost. The momentum of the vehicle caused it to plunge into the sea, where it eventually settled in shallow water. There were six occupants on board the aircraft at the time of the accident. All individuals were successfully rescued from the wreckage without reported injuries.
Findings
- The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
- Inadequate stopping distance during the landing roll was the primary factor in the excursion.
