What happened
On the morning of the accident, a single-engine aircraft, registration V3-HFD, departed from San Pedro Airport on Ambergris Caye. The flight initially carried two passengers, who disembarked at the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport. Following the arrival of the passengers, the pilot received takeoff clearance and departed the airport at 0720LT, heading toward Belize City Municipal Airport.
At 0722LT, the pilot communicated his position near the Haulover Bridge to Air Traffic Control. During this exchange, the pilot was directed to switch to the common broadcast frequency, 122.8 MHz, for position reporting. No subsequent radio contact or emergency signals were recorded following this transmission.
While performing a low-altitude approach to the Belize City Municipal Airport, the aircraft type struck overhead power cables. This impact caused the plane to crash into a house situated in the Belama Phase 2 district. The collision resulted in a post-crash fire that consumed the wreckage. The debris field was located approximately 3 km southwest of the threshold of runway 12.
Findings
The accident resulted in one fatality involving the pilot, while one injury was reported to a person on the ground. The aircraft was completely destroyed by the forces of the impact and the subsequent fire. The primary factor in the crash was the striking of power cables during the final approach phase.
