Aircraft overrun at Corozal Airport

No fatalities • Corozal, Belize • Takeoff (climb)

A single-engine aircraft failed to stop during its takeoff roll at Corozal Airport, resulting in an excursion into trees.

What happened

While operating on runway 25 at Corozal Airport, the pilot of a single-engine aircraft initiated an aborted takeoff. During the takeoff roll, the decision was made to terminate the procedure; however, the aircraft could not be brought to a halt before the end of the runway.

As a result of the insufficient stopping distance, the plane overran the runway perimeter, breached a fence, and eventually collided with several trees. Despite the impact, all 12 occupants on board were able to exit the aircraft without sustaining any injuries. The aircraft itself sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.

Findings

  • The aircraft was unable to stop within the available runway length following the decision to abandon the takeoff.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to stop within the remaining runway distance after the pilot aborted the takeoff roll.
