What happened
A charter flight operating from Likawage to Dar es Salaam was preparing for departure when the crew encountered issues with engine performance. While positioned at the runway threshold, the flight crew applied maximum power while keeping the brakes engaged. However, the engine failed to achieve the necessary takeoff power level during this period.
Despite the lack of sufficient power, the captain released the brakes and began the takeoff roll. The single-engine aircraft proceeded along the runway for approximately three-quarters of its length before the engine finally reached the required power setting. At this point, the aircraft failed to rotate as intended. The plane continued down the runway, overran the end of the paved surface, and struck trees. The impact caused the aircraft to burst into flames, resulting in the partial destruction of the airframe.
Findings
- The crew initiated the takeoff roll before the engine had reached the necessary power parameters.
- Insufficient engine power during the initial takeoff roll prevented the aircraft from achieving the required rotation speed.
