What happened
During a recent charter operation at the Mweya Airstrip, situated within Queen Elizabeth National Park, a single-engine airplane experienced a runway excursion. Upon completing its landing sequence, the aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently within the available runway length. This loss of braking control caused the plane to overshoot the end of the airstrip, where it subsequently struck a residential building.
At the time of the incident, the aircraft was carrying a total of five people, consisting of the crew and three passengers from Europe. Despite the impact with the house, there were no reported zero fatalities or injuries among the occupants. The aircraft sustained significant damage during the collision and was declared a total loss.
Findings
- The aircraft was unable to come to a halt before the end of the paved surface.
- The primary factor in the accident was the inability to stop within the remaining runway distance.
