Training aircraft crash near Annino Air Base

2 fatalities • Annino AFB, Russia • Takeoff (climb)

A training flight involving a local maneuver mission ended in a fatal crash near Gorelovo after the aircraft stalled and struck a building.

What happened

During an afternoon training mission, a crew departed from Annino Air Base (Gorelovo) to perform a series of touch-and-go maneuvers. Following the successful completion of two circuits, the aircraft landed without incident. The crew then initiated a subsequent takeoff; however, they did not notify air traffic control of this departure.

Shortly after lifting off, the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 10 to 15 meters. At this low altitude, the plane experienced a significant right-side roll, reaching an angle of 70 degrees. This maneuver resulted in an aerodynamic stall, causing the aircraft to descend rapidly into a kindergarten situated roughly one kilometer from the airfield. The impact triggered a fire that consumed the wreckage.

Findings

  • The aircraft was completely destroyed during the impact and subsequent fire.
  • The accident resulted in two fatalities, involving both members of the flight crew.
  • The primary factor in the crash was the aerodynamic stall following an extreme banking maneuver.

Probable cause

The aircraft entered an aerodynamic stall following a steep 70-degree right roll at a very low altitude.
