Accident Overview
An aircraft experienced a collision with trees and terrain during takeoff. The pilot reported that the aircraft accelerated normally to V1 speed, but subsequently struck the tops of trees located approximately 350 to 500 feet beyond the runway end. After hitting the trees, the aircraft traveled about another 1,000 feet before impacting the ground. No preimpact part failure or malfunction was identified.
Sequence of Events
The takeoff was conducted from a 2,300-foot runway that sloped downward. The reported temperature was 92° Fahrenheit, resulting in a density altitude of approximately 2,500 feet. Wind conditions were light: the pilot reported wind from 010° at 3 to 5 knots, while a witness reported a 3 to 5 knot tailwind. Performance charts indicated that in calm wind conditions, the aircraft would have required a takeoff distance of 2,200 feet to clear a 50-foot obstacle.
Performance Considerations
The combination of a short, sloping runway, high density altitude, and tailwind likely reduced the aircraft's climb performance, preventing it from clearing the trees at the end of the runway.
