Flight History
The accident occurred during a night approach in conditions of low ceilings and low visibility. The flight crew had previously conducted one approach that resulted in a missed approach. During the subsequent approach, the aircraft was high on the glide path and touched down at an excessive speed and well beyond the intended touchdown zone.
Accident Sequence
After touching down long, the aircraft ran off the end of the runway. It first struck terrain approximately 300 feet past the runway end, then impacted the ground a second time 115 feet further. The aircraft then collided with the Instrument Landing System (ILS) localizer antenna.
Damage
A portion of the left wing sustained fire damage. The source notes no indications of an attempted go-around.
Probable Cause
The official probable cause states: the failure of the pilot to follow the proper procedures/directives by not following the glideslope which resulted in not being able to attain the proper touchdown point.
