Accident Overview

On a descent into Columbus, the pilot of a Beechcraft King Air encountered poor weather conditions with thunderstorm activity. While flying in clouds, the pilot experienced spatial disorientation and lost control of the airplane. The aircraft entered a dive and, due to overload failure, the horizontal stabilizers and wings failed. The airplane crashed in a field and burst into flames. The pilot, the sole occupant, was killed.

Circumstances

The flight was conducted as a prearranged IFR information flight. During the descent, the pilot faced deteriorating weather, including thunderstorms. Spatial disorientation occurred while the aircraft was in cloud, causing the pilot to lose control. The resulting dive imposed loads beyond the design stress limits of the airframe, leading to structural failure of the wings and horizontal stabilizers. The aircraft impacted the ground and was consumed by fire.
