What happened
On the day of the accident, a Cessna 152, registration N5522L, departed from Redbird Airport in Dallas to perform solo maneuvers. The student pilot was operating within a private practice area that shared airspace with the extended inbound approach path for runways 31L and 31R at Love Field. Simultaneously, a Cessna 441, registration N400BG, was being vectored by DFW approach control for an ILS back course to runway 31R. The controller had instructed the crew of N400BG to descend to 3,000 feet while maintaining a heading of 290°.
While descending through roughly 3,600 feet, approximately 14 miles southeast of Love Field, the two aircraft collided in a quartering head-on impact. At the moment of impact, the Cessna 152 was positioned near the boundary of its practice area and had recently finished an approximately 180° turn toward the east. The collision resulted in the destruction of both aircraft and five fatalities.
Findings
Investigations into the accident highlighted several critical factors. Although radar data for both aircraft was visible to the controller, the Cessna 152 lacked a mode C transponder capable of reporting altitude, displaying only a 1200 beacon code on the scope. While air traffic control did not issue a traffic advisory to the crew of the Cessna 441, investigators determined such an advisory was not required under the circumstances. The collision was attributed to inadequate visual lookout by the pilots and improper in-flight planning, alongside insufficient monitoring by air traffic control personnel.
