What happened
The twin-engine aircraft departed Anchorage-Ted Stevens International Airport at 0912 local time. It was operating a charter flight to Cape Newenham, carrying two pilots and six US Army Corps engineers. The passengers were traveling to the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site, which operated under the Alaska NORAD Region and the 611th Air Support Group at Elmendorf AFB.
Approximately ninety minutes into the journey, the crew received reports of deteriorating weather conditions at the destination. Visibility was limited to 400 metres with a ceiling of 200 feet. The flight crew entered a holding pattern and completed three circuits over twenty minutes before initiating descent from the north.
During the approach in foggy conditions, the aircraft impacted the ground north of the airport. The plane was destroyed upon impact. Local authorities confirmed that all eight occupants were killed in the accident.
