What happened
During a repositioning flight from Garoua Airport to Yaoundé, a single-engine airplane encountered engine and fuel-related complications. The flight, which commenced after 6:00 PM, was being conducted during hours prohibited for this specific aircraft type. In response to the technical difficulties, the pilot attempted to divert the aircraft to Foumban Airport, situated approximately 20 km northeast of Foumbot.
While flying at night, the aircraft collided with trees and crashed within a hilly, forested area. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. The pilot sustained injuries during the accident.
Findings
Investigations into the crash suggest that a leak developed within the fuel system. It is believed that the fuel tank was compromised because the fuel cap had been damaged during an earlier stop at Tamanrasset Airport. Additionally, the pilot lacked sufficient experience regarding flight operations within the African region.
