Flight Details
On 13 May 2023, a Cessna U206G aircraft with registration OB-1187, operated by Aero Palcazu S.A.C., was scheduled to transport passengers from Yurimaguas Airport (SPMS) to the Lagunas landing strip in the Alto Amazonas province of Loreto, Peru. The aircraft carried one pilot and three passengers. It departed Yurimaguas at 13:32 local time with an estimated arrival of 14:00. According to the pilot, weather conditions were favorable during the takeoff, climb, and cruise phases, with no technical or operational anomalies reported.
Approach and Landing
During the approach, the pilot conducted a standard company reconnaissance overflight of the runway to verify its condition and alert any persons or aircraft in the vicinity. The pilot observed that approximately the first 500 meters from threshold 02 had been removed by heavy machinery. Consequently, the pilot decided to land beyond the affected section. After aligning with the landing surface, the aircraft touched down as planned. However, upon applying the brakes, the aircraft did not decelerate as expected. The reduced deceleration was presumably due to decreased friction caused by moisture on the runway surface.
Runway Excursion and Impact
The insufficient braking led to a loss of directional control to the right, resulting in a runway excursion beyond the right lateral edge of the landing strip. As the aircraft departed the runway, the right wing struck two wooden fence posts belonging to the perimeter fence. This impact partially decelerated the aircraft and caused a right turn, after which the aircraft continued moving over soft, wet terrain before coming to a stop outside the runway, near a nearby house. The nose wheel left skid marks and became partially embedded in the soft ground. Photographic evidence showed water accumulation adjacent to the runway, confirming saturated soil conditions.
Damage and Injuries
The accident caused damage to the right wing of the aircraft. No injuries were reported among the occupants.
Probable Cause
The investigation determined the probable cause as: "The inadequate evaluation by the pilot of the effective length available for landing and the actual conditions of the runway surface, which were wet and with puddles, causing a significant reduction in braking effectiveness and the subsequent loss of directional control of the aircraft."
