What happened
The aircraft was conducting an operation over Bali Island when it encountered enemy action. While in the approach phase for Denpasar Airport, the floatplane descended to an altitude of approximately 150 feet. At this point, a Japanese fighter engaged the target, causing the plane to crash and ignite immediately upon impact with the ground or water.
The destruction of the airframe was total, and the resulting fire consumed the interior. Tragically, all seven crew members were killed in the incident. The flight deck and cabin personnel included the pilot, radio mechanics, aircraft maintenance men, and other support staff who were part of the operational team for that specific mission.
Findings
The official investigation concluded that the loss was a direct result of combat activity. The primary factor leading to the accident was the interception by hostile forces. Specifically, the aircraft was shot down by a Japanese fighter during its final approach, leaving no opportunity for a safe landing or escape.
