What happened
The aircraft was operating a ferry mission from NAS Norfolk, Virginia, with the intended destination of NAS Natal, Brasil. During the final approach phase, having departed Belém, the crew faced deteriorating meteorological conditions characterized by heavy rainfall and zero visibility. While maintaining a low altitude in these poor conditions, the airplane struck the water surface. The impact occurred approximately 8 km off the coast of Maxaranguape, north of Natal. Seven members of the crew lost their lives in the accident, while three others were rescued after being stranded for 18 hours.
Findings
Official investigations indicated that the crash was likely caused by downdrafts encountered during the approach. These atmospheric conditions, combined with the lack of visual references due to heavy rain and zero visibility, contributed to the controlled flight into terrain (water).
