What happened
During a maritime patrol mission, the aircraft impacted the slope of a mountain situated near Cape Kovrizhka in the western region of Unalaska Island. The collision resulted in significant casualties among the flight deck personnel. Of the nine individuals on board, eight crew members were killed. One individual survived the impact and was subsequently rescued from the crash site.
Findings
The official investigation determined that the accident was caused by a controlled flight into terrain. This indicates that the aircraft remained under pilot control until it collided with the mountainous terrain, rather than suffering a mechanical failure or structural disintegration prior to impact.
