What happened
On June 3, 2023, a Cessna 152, registration OK-GOL, was performing a recreational flight from Příbram to Strakonice with a pilot and one passenger on board. While approaching runway 13 at Strakonice, the pilot performed a 360-degree turn to yield priority to a glider. Due to a glider positioned near the runway threshold, the pilot adjusted the landing profile, resulting in a longer approach.
During the landing maneuver, a sudden shift in wind direction occurred, resulting in a tailwind component. The aircraft touched down on runway 11:13:31 local time, but the pilot maintained a high speed and a shallow descent angle. The aircraft continued down the runway without significant deceleration. Upon exiting the runway, the aircraft encountered a mound of earth covered in tall grass, causing the aircraft to strike the obstacle and overturn onto its back.
The investigation
The ÚZPLN investigation utilized the pilot's testimony and airport security camera footage. The examination of the aircraft revealed extensive damage, including a bent nose gear, damaged propeller blades, and structural damage to the wings and tail. However, the investigation confirmed that all control elements, including the brakes, were fully functional, and the engine had operated normally throughout the flight. The investigation also noted that the pilot had limited recent flight experience, having flown only 2 hours and 21 minutes in the first half of 2023.
Findings
- The pilot executed an incorrect landing budget for runway 13, approaching at a higher speed and a shallow angle.
- The pilot failed to complete the landing maneuver in accordance with the flight manual following touchdown.
- A sudden change in ground wind direction increased the difficulty of the landing maneuver for the pilot.
- The remaining runway length was sufficient for a safe stop under the prevailing weather conditions.
- All aircraft damage was caused by the impact with the terrain obstacle and the subsequent rollover.
