A three-engine charter flight from Ankara to Tripoli suffered an electrical malfunction, declared an emergency, and crashed, killing all eight on board including Libyan military officials.

Incident Overview

On a charter flight from Ankara-Esenboğa to Tripoli, a three-engine airplane departed at 2017LT. At 2031LT, while cruising at 32,000 feet, the crew transmitted a PAN PAN PAN message reporting a malfunction of the electric system. Air traffic control cleared the flight to return to Ankara, and the crew initiated a left turn. Two minutes later, the crew declared an emergency. Radio communication between ATC and the crew became difficult, and shortly thereafter the airplane entered an uncontrolled descent, crashing in an open field near the village of Kesikkavak, west of Haymana.

Destruction and Fatalities

The airplane was destroyed in the impact. All eight occupants were killed, among them General Mohammed Ali Ahmed Al-Haddad, Chief of Staff of the Libyan Armed Forces, who was returning to Libya after a meeting with Yaşar Güler, Turkish Minister of National Defense. The other passengers, all members of the Libyan delegation, included: General Al-Fitouri Gharibil, Chief of Staff of the Libyan Ground Forces; General Mahmoud Al-Qatawi, in charge of Military production; Muhammad Al-Asawi Diab, advisor to the Chief of Staff; and Muhammad Omar Ahmed Mahjoub, military photographer.
