What happened
During a prisoner transfer flight from Mayo to Whitehorse, an aircraft operated by the RCMP crashed in the Yukon territory. While performing a landing circuit near Carmacks under favorable weather conditions, the plane entered a roll and subsequently spun into the ground. The wreckage was located in a bank situated just below the Mayo Road, positioned roughly between the Carmacks bridge and the Territorial Garage.
The impact occurred near the Yukon River, leaving the aircraft heavily burned. There were five fatalities among the occupants, which included the pilot, three police officers, and one passenger.
Findings
Official investigations into the crash concluded that there were no mechanical malfunctions present on the aircraft before the accident occurred. The pilot was noted to be highly experienced. Investigators suggested that the loss of control might have been triggered by local downdrafts or an aerodynamic stall resulting from inadequate airspeed.
