Aircraft runway excursion at Manila-Ninoy Aquino Airport

No fatalities • Manila-Ninoy Aquino, Philippines • Landing (descent or approach)

A four-engine aircraft returning to Manila following hydraulic issues veered off the runway during landing, resulting in no injuries but significant aircraft damage.

What happened

A scheduled flight carrying 45 passengers and four crew members departed from Manila-Ninoy Aquino Airport at 15:36 local time, bound for Caticlan. During the approach phase to Caticlan, the crew identified a malfunction within the aircraft's hydraulic system. This technical issue prevented the right main landing gear from extending, leaving it stuck inside the wheel well.

Due to the landing gear malfunction, the pilot elected to abort the arrival at Caticlan and instead returned to Manila. The aircraft entered a holding pattern to reduce weight by burning off fuel before attempting a landing. Upon touchdown on runway 24, the aircraft lost directional control and veered toward the right side of the runway. The plane eventually came to a stop in a nearby grassy area.

Findings

While all 49 occupants were able to evacuate the aircraft without injury, the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss. The primary factor leading to the runway excursion was the loss of control during the landing roll following the return to the airport.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered off the runway during the landing roll after returning to Manila to address a hydraulic failure.
