What happened
During a flight originating from Manila, the crew initiated an approach toward Catarman Airport under marginal weather conditions. At the time of the incident, recent rainfall had left the surface of runway 04/22, which measures 1,350 meters in length, notably wet.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently within the available runway distance. This led to a runway excursion where the plane exited the paved surface and came to a stop in an adjacent paddy field. Despite the impact, all 38 occupants managed to evacuate the aircraft without injury. The aircraft sustained damage that was determined to be beyond economical repair.
Findings
Preliminary assessments suggest that the wet state of the runway may have contributed to the incident. Specifically, aquaplaning is identified as a potential factor that prevented the aircraft from stopping within the remaining runway length.
