Runway excursion involving aircraft during takeoff roll

No fatalities • Kigoma, Tanzania • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced an engine failure during takeoff, leading to a runway overrun and significant structural damage.

What happened

While performing the takeoff roll on runway 34, the aircraft experienced a failure of the right engine. In response to the malfunction, the captain executed a rejected takeoff and applied emergency braking. Despite these efforts, the aircraft was unable to halt within the 1,767-metre length of the runway.

During the excursion, the right main landing gear struck a pothole, which resulted in the right wing being detached from the airframe. The aircraft continued to slide for several dozen metres before eventually coming to a stop in a nearby pasture. The impact and subsequent slide resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft type.

Findings

  • The primary factor in the loss of control during the overrun was the impact with a pothole on the runway surface.
  • The incident resulted in 2 injuries and 37 occupants remaining unharmed.

Probable cause

An engine failure during the takeoff roll led to a rejected takeoff that ended in a runway excursion after the landing gear struck a pothole.
