Accident Overview
On Sunday, 28 May 2023, at approximately 14:30 UTC (08:30 local time), an ultralight vehicle, registration UL-TI-073, departed from Guápiles Aerodrome (MRGP) with two occupants on board. The aircraft, a Rotax Autogyro MTO Sport model MT-03 operated privately, was in the takeoff-climb phase when it descended onto a residence in Urbanización Sinaí, Guápiles, Pococí, Limón, Costa Rica.
Injuries
The passenger was transported to Guápiles Hospital in yellow (moderate) condition. The pilot, a 40-year-old male holding an ultralight license, was uninjured. Five occupants of the house also escaped without injury. A total of six people were reported uninjured, and one passenger sustained minor injuries.
Damage
The impact destroyed the gate of the residence and damaged the roof of a parked Suzuki Grand Vitara. The aircraft itself suffered substantial or major damage, with most of its fuselage stations affected. The main rotor struck the gate and subsequently the vehicle. No evidence of fire was found before or after the impact.
Investigation Progress
The investigation, conducted by the Unidad de Accidentes e Incidentes Aéreos (UAI) of the Consejo Técnico de Aviación Civil (CETAC), is 85% complete. The focus has been on analyzing the aircraft's engine, which experienced a sudden stop during the event. The final report will be published on the official website. No probable cause has been determined at this preliminary stage.
