What happened
During a flight originally scheduled to travel from Mitú to La Pedrera, the flight crew encountered worsening meteorological conditions. Because the crew could not obtain the most recent weather update for their intended destination, they elected to divert the flight to Taraira.
After remaining on the ground for a period of time, the crew attempted to depart from the Taraira airfield. However, the runway surface was saturated with water. During the takeoff roll, the aircraft failed to reach the necessary velocity for flight. The crew initiated an aborted takeoff, but the aircraft could not be stopped within the runway limits and overran the surface.
There were no injuries among the three occupants on board. While all personnel escaped the incident safely, the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
- The primary factor in the excursion was the wet and soft condition of the runway surface during the takeoff attempt.
