What happened
During a local training operation departing from Langley AFB, a twin-engine aircraft was cruising above the Chesapeake Bay when it struck another military aircraft. The second plane involved was a Douglas A-26 Invader, identified by registration 44-34111, which was also operating with a crew of three.
The impact caused both aircraft to enter a steep dive toward the water. Both planes subsequently crashed into the bay at a location situated approximately ten miles east of Langley AFB. The accident resulted in six fatalities, as there were no survivors from either the primary aircraft or the 44-34111 crew.
Findings
- The incident occurred during the cruise phase of flight.
- A mid-air collision between the two US Air Force aircraft was the primary event leading to the crash.
