What happened

A training mission originated in Summerside with a planned destination of Goose Bay. During the approach phase toward Goose Bay Airport, the flight crew performed a circling maneuver around the control tower and communicated via radio their intention to abort the arrival and return to their home base in Summerside.

Following the failure of the aircraft to arrive at its intended destination, search and rescue operations were initiated. Five days after the disappearance, on May 19, the wreckage was located in a remote region approximately 65 km north of Saint-Augustin. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft and there were four fatalities among the crew.

Findings

The investigation confirmed that the aircraft crashed in an isolated area after the crew had declared their intent to divert from Goose Bay back to Summerside.
