What happened
At approximately 05:30 local time, a four-engine airplane departed from N'Djamena Airport, destined for Faya-Largeau. The flight was transporting military equipment along with 21 drums of fuel and was operated by a crew of five.
During the descent toward Faya-Largeau, while operating at a low altitude, the aircraft was struck by a SAM-7 missile. The projectile impacted the number two engine, causing it to catch fire and separate from the wing. Shortly after this initial impact, the number one engine also detached from the airframe.
In response to the dual engine failures, the pilot lowered the aircraft's altitude and initiated an emergency landing in a desert region situated roughly 55 km west of Faya-Largeau. The aircraft performed a belly landing, sliding for several dozen meters before a post-crash fire erupted. While the aircraft was completely destroyed by the flames, all five crew members managed to evacuate the wreckage and sustained only minor injuries.
Findings
The destruction of the aircraft was caused by the direct impact of a SAM-7 missile on the propulsion system.
