History of the Flight
On 13 December 2022, an ATR 72-212A (registration SU-BVD), operated by Air Cairo, departed Hurghada Airport (HEGN) at 11:05 UTC as scheduled domestic flight MSC053 to Cairo Airport. The flight carried two cockpit crew members, one observer, two cabin crew members, and 54 passengers. The flight was conducted normally and uneventfully.
At 12:30 UTC, the Cairo tower air traffic controller cleared the aircraft for landing on Runway 23R. The aircraft touched down at 12:32 UTC and vacated the runway via exit A3, then continued to exit J1 without incident.
At 12:38 UTC, while at the intersection of taxiways J1 and J, the captain heard an abnormal sound and stopped the aircraft. Ground staff signaled to the captain that a wheel had separated from the aircraft. The captain then requested a "Follow Me" car from ATC to assess the situation.
At 12:39 UTC, ATC asked the aircraft to hold position. The captain notified ATC that he could taxi to the assigned stand, but ATC refused until the Follow Me assessment was completed. At 12:40 UTC, ATC cleared the aircraft to taxi to the assigned stand under Follow Me instructions. At 12:41 UTC, the aircraft began taxiing toward the stand and stopped at stand No. 35 at 12:43 UTC.
Investigation Activities
The investigation has included the creation of a photographic record, readouts of all available data from the flight data recorder, and interviews with the captain.
