History of the Flight
On 2 February 2025, an Airbus A320-251N, registration G-UZHA, operated by easyJet, was conducting a scheduled commercial flight from Manchester International Airport, United Kingdom, to Hurghada International Airport (HEGN), Egypt. During the approach phase, while descending over a mountainous area, the aircraft descended to a minimum of 882 feet radio altitude at an indicated airspeed of 247 knots. The captain disconnected the autopilot and initiated an immediate manual turning climb maneuver to avoid terrain. Five seconds later, multiple Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) alerts were triggered, including “Terrain, Terrain” and “Pull Up.” This led to a Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) situation. The flight subsequently continued and landed on Runway 34L at Hurghada International Airport. There were no injuries to persons on board and no damage to the aircraft.
Investigation
The Egyptian Aircraft Accident Investigation Directorate is conducting the investigation, classified as a serious incident. A draft final report has been shared with participating states and organizations. No recommendations have been issued to date. The next steps include completion of the final report, subject to receipt and consideration of comments from participating states and organizations, and final coordination and discussion of those comments.
