Aircraft accident near Manacapuru, Brazil

24 fatalities • Manacapuru, Brazil • Landing (descent or approach)

A twin-engine charter flight crashed into the Rio Manacapuru during an emergency approach following an engine failure.

What happened

A charter flight departed from Coari Airport at 12:40 local time, destined for Manaus-Eduardo Gomes Airport. The aircraft, a twin engine plane, was transporting 26 passengers and two crew members. Approximately 30 minutes after takeoff, while maintaining an altitude of 11,500 feet, the crew notified air traffic control of a failure in the left engine.

In response to the mechanical issue, the pilots decided to divert the flight to the Manacapuru Airfield, an inactive landing site. During the approach to runway 08, the aircraft experienced a left-wing roll reaching a 30-degree angle. This maneuver resulted in the aircraft crashing into the Rio Manacapuru. The accident resulted in 24 fatalities and left 4 passengers with minor injuries.

Findings

  • The flight was interrupted by a left engine failure during the cruise phase.
  • The loss of power led to an uncontrolled roll during the diversion attempt.

Probable cause

An engine failure during cruise led to an unstable approach and subsequent loss of control during the diversion to an alternate airfield.
