Occurrence
On 29th June 2017 at approximately 12:15 pm Eastern Standard Time (1615 UTC), a Cessna 340A aircraft, registration N340DP, was involved in an incident at Treasure Cay International Airport, Abaco, Bahamas.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that while approaching the Treasure Cay area, weather conditions deteriorated, prompting him to circle the vicinity to avoid the adverse weather. During the final approach to runway 14, the aircraft experienced a sudden drop in altitude, which the pilot described as a ‘microburst’. This event caused the aircraft to slam onto the runway.
Sequence of Events
Upon impact with the runway, the landing gear collapsed. The aircraft subsequently spun out of control and veered to the left of runway 14. It exited the runway at approximately 3,000 feet and continued another 714 feet to the left of the runway before coming to rest.
Damage and Injuries
The aircraft sustained substantial damage to its undercarriage, propellers, and other components. The two occupants on board (the pilot and passenger) suffered minor injuries.
Investigation Status
The Bahamas Air Accident Investigation Department (AAID) classified this event as an incident and completed the investigation. The case is now closed.
