Occurrence
On 23 December 2019, at 11:09 AM local time, a Cessna P210N (registration N50DH) ditched in waters approximately 12 nautical miles north of North Eleuthera, Bahamas. The aircraft was operating under instrument flight rules (IFR) on a flight from Stuart, Florida (KSUA) to San Juan, Puerto Rico (TJSJ).
Engine Failure
According to the pilot, while cruising at 17,000 feet northeast of North Eleuthera, a significant loss of engine power occurred. The pilot applied anti-icing, shortly after which an icing indication was received and the engine lost all power.
Emergency Response
The pilot declared an emergency with Miami Center air traffic control and attempted to restart the engine, but was unsuccessful. He diverted towards North Eleuthera Airport (MYEH) but could not reach the aerodrome. The aircraft ditched approximately 14 NM northeast of MYEH.
Rescue
The pilot exited the aircraft wearing a life vest and carrying a life raft and personal locator beacon, which aided the US Coast Guard in locating him. He was rescued by the Coast Guard and transported to Nassau for medical attention. No injuries were reported. The aircraft and its contents were lost to the sea.
Investigation
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) conducted a limited-scope investigation. The occurrence was categorized as an accident with occurrence type "Power Plant Malfunction." No safety messages or recommendations were issued.
