What happened
A twin-engine aircraft departed from Mogadishu-Aden Adde Airport while operating a scheduled flight to Galkayo. The flight was carrying a total of 55 people at the time of departure. Approximately 15 minutes after takeoff, the crew identified technical difficulties during the flight, which prompted a decision to abort the mission and return to the departure airport.
Upon returning to Mogadishu, the aircraft touched down on runway 23. However, the plane failed to decelerate sufficiently before the end of the paved surface. The aircraft overran the runway and came to rest in shallow water located a few dozen meters beyond the runway threshold. While the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss, there were no injuries reported among the passengers or the crew.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced mechanical or technical issues during the initial climb and cruise phases.
- The inability to stop within the remaining runway distance led to the excursion into the water.
