What happened
Following departure from runway 29 at Juliaca-Inca Manco Capac Airport, the aircraft struggled to establish a positive rate of climb. Shortly after passing the threshold of the runway at a low altitude, the crew performed several actions including retracting the flaps, bringing up the landing gear, and reducing engine power.
Despite these maneuvers, the flight path remained low for approximately 1,800 meters. During this period, the plane collided with various obstacles before ultimately crashing into a river bed located roughly 2.5 km from the end of the runway. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. The accident resulted in 12 fatalities and 57 injuries among those on board.
Findings
Investigations concluded that the crew utilized an incorrect takeoff configuration, failing to adhere to established operational procedures. This error led to the aircraft maintaining an excessive angle of attack immediately after liftoff, which subsequently caused the plane to enter an aerodynamic stall.
