Aircraft landing accident at Coca Airport

No fatalities • Coca, Ecuador • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft operating from Quito undershot the runway at Coca Airport, resulting in significant damage and several injuries.

What happened

During an approach to runway 15 at Coca Airport, the crew of the aircraft was flying too low on the final approach. As a result, the aircraft impacted the ground approximately 4.5 metres before the start of the runway. The force of the impact caused the left main landing gear to be detached from the airframe.

Following the initial touchdown, the aircraft traveled 112 metres along the runway surface before veering toward the left side of the pavement. The excursion continued for an additional 263 metres before the aircraft finally came to a stop against a concrete wall.

All 65 occupants on board were successfully rescued from the wreckage. While there were no fatalities, seven passengers sustained injuries during the incident. The aircraft was subsequently determined to be a total loss due to damage sustained during the excursion.

Findings

  • The aircraft was positioned too low during the final approach phase, leading to the short landing.

Probable cause

The aircraft struck the ground short of the runway threshold due to an insufficient approach altitude.
