What happened
A charter flight traveling from Jakarta-Halim Perdanaksuma Airport to Singapore-Seletar Airport experienced an overrun during its landing phase. The aircraft was transporting a group of expatriates departing Indonesia amid period of political instability. During the approach, the co-pilot completed the necessary checklists but neglected to arm the lift dumper. This omission prevented the antiskid system from functioning correctly.
Upon touchdown on a wet runway, the crew attempted standard braking procedures. However, due to the lack of effective antiskid assistance and the slippery surface, these measures proved inadequate. The captain subsequently engaged the emergency brakes, an action generally discouraged when hydroplaning is a possibility. Consequently, the aircraft type could not be halted within the available runway length. The momentum caused the plane to exit the paved surface, leading to the loss of the left main gear and the left wing. Despite the heavy damage that resulted in the aircraft being written off, all 80 occupants managed to evacuate the plane without any 0 injuries reported.
Findings
- The failure to arm the lift dumper during the approach phase prevented the antiskid system from operating.
- The application of emergency braking during suspected hydroplaning conditions contributed to the loss of directional and longitudinal control.
