What happened
During a departure from Jayapura-Sentani Airport, the flight crew reported engine difficulties to air traffic control while the aircraft was in its initial climb phase. In response to the reported malfunction, controllers authorized an immediate return to the airport. The crew performed a 180-degree turn and commenced an approach toward runway 30.
Upon landing, the crew attempted to decelerate the aircraft using standard braking procedures and reduced engine thrust. During this period, a technical malfunction developed in the right engine. This failure caused the aircraft to lose directional control, resulting in it veering toward the left side of the runway. The aircraft subsequently struck a drainage ditch and halted after colliding with palm trees. The final position of the wreckage was approximately 72 metres left of the runway centerline and 1,050 metres from the runway threshold.
Findings
- The incident resulted in one fatality and 18 injuries.
- The aircraft was a total loss.
- The primary factor in the excursion was a technical problem involving the right engine during the landing roll.
