What happened
A charter flight traveling from Sarasota to Cap Haïtien, with a scheduled stop in George Town, Bahamas, ended in a fatal accident. Approximately thirty minutes after departing from George Town Airport, the aircraft was maintaining an altitude of 9,000 feet when the pilot reported a failure of the right engine to air traffic control. Following this notification, the flight was authorized to divert to Matthew Town.
During the subsequent approach to the diversion airfield, the left engine also suffered a loss of power. This secondary failure resulted in the aircraft entering an uncontrolled descent. The plane crashed into the ocean at a distance of roughly 2 km from the coast. While the pilot was successfully rescued from the wreckage, the accident resulted in two fatalities among the passengers.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced a progressive loss of power, beginning with the right engine and followed by the left engine.
- The loss of power in both engines led to the uncontrolled descent and subsequent impact with the sea.
