What happened
On 16 October 2008, a Gippsland Aeronautics GA8 Airvan, identified by registration VH-WRT, departed Elcho Island for a scheduled freight charter mission in the Northern Territory. The flight was intended to be a round trip. During the mission, the aircraft failed to return as planned, and its disappearance was noted at approximately 12:30.
An eyewitness observed the aircraft during the initial stages of its journey. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was carrying only the pilot. Despite recovery efforts, the pilot and the primary wreckage of the aircraft remain missing.
