Aircraft damage during training maneuvers at Migalovo Air Base

No fatalities • Tver-Migalovo AFB, Russia • Landing (descent or approach)

A training flight involving a nose-down landing resulted in significant structural damage to the aircraft at Migalovo Air Base.

What happened

During a night-time local training mission at Migalovo Air Base, the crew was engaged in performing touch-and-go maneuvers. During one of these operations, the aircraft approached the runway in a nose-down attitude. This orientation caused the nose landing gear to strike the runway surface with excessive force.

Upon impact, the nose gear penetrated the aircraft floor directly behind the cockpit area. The momentum of the landing caused the aircraft to slide for several dozen meters along the runway before it finally came to a stop.

Findings

All four crew members successfully evacuated the aircraft without injury. However, the aircraft sustained severe structural damage, including a wrinkled fuselage, which rendered the airframe a total loss. The primary factor in the accident was the incorrect pitch attitude during the landing approach.

Probable cause

The aircraft struck the runway with a nose-down attitude, causing the nose gear to collapse through the cockpit floor.
