Near-Miss Involving Boeing 737 and Diamond DA20 Near Reus Airport (G-GDFS)

Incident Overview and Aircraft Details On 12 May 2019, a near-miss occurred near Reus Airport involving a Boeing 737-86N, registration G-GDFS, and a Diamond DA20-C1, registration EC-KMH. The 737, operated by Jet2.com LTD, was on approach to Reus Airport after a missed approach. The DA20, operated by Aero Link Air Services, was preparing to enter the Reus Airport Control Zone (CTR) via reporting point E. The 737 was flying at 3,800 feet, while the DA20 was also at 3,800 feet, despite a published maximum altitude of 2,000 feet for arrivals via point E. The DA20 had been instructed to maintain 3,500 feet or higher due to an aerobatic air show over Tarragona. ## Contributing Factors and Resolution The controller in the Reus control tower was receiving on-the-job instruction and was supervised by an instructor controller. The instructor had configured the control tower radar to display only the Reus Aerodrome Traffic Zone (ATZ) airspace, as the Unit Training Plan indicated the approach control service was procedural. Neither the trainee controller nor the instructor was aware of the potential conflict. The flight paths of the two aircraft converged, prompting the 737 to receive a Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) Resolution Advisory (RA). The 737 executed an avoidance maneuver that cleared the conflict. The minimum horizontal distance between the aircraft was 0.6 nautical miles, and the vertical distance was 200 feet. No injuries were reported, and neither aircraft sustained damage.
