Incident Overview
On 2 September 2024, a Cathay Pacific Airways Limited Airbus A350-1041 aircraft, registration B-LXI, departed from Hong Kong International Airport (VHHH) for Zurich Airport (LSZH), Switzerland. During the departure, a propulsion system fire occurred, classified as a serious incident under the Hong Kong Civil Aviation (Investigation of Accidents) Regulations (Cap. 448B). The incident is designated as SCF–PP–PSF (System/Component Failure or Malfunction – Powerplant – Propulsion System Fire).
Investigation Progress
The Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) of Hong Kong is conducting the investigation. As of the publication of this interim statement on 2 September 2025, the investigation team is analysing collected evidence and information to determine the circumstances and causes. The investigation report is being drafted. In accordance with Annex 13 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, if the report cannot be made public within twelve months, an interim statement is issued on each anniversary of the occurrence detailing progress and any safety issues raised.
