Background
On 21 April 2023, an Airbus A320-214 aircraft, registered as B-LPI, encountered turbulence while en route from Hong Kong International Airport to Haikou Meilan International Airport. The occurrence is subject to an investigation under the Hong Kong Civil Aviation (Investigation of Accidents) Regulations (Cap. 448B).
Investigation Progress
The investigation team has collected evidence and information related to the turbulence encounter. Analysis of the causes of the accident is ongoing, and a final report is being drafted. As of 16 April 2026, the investigation had not yet concluded, necessitating the release of an interim statement in accordance with paragraph 6.6 of Annex 13 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation.
Interim Statement
Per Annex 13 requirements, if the investigation report cannot be made publicly available within twelve months of the occurrence, the investigating authority must publish an interim statement on each anniversary. This interim statement details the progress of the investigation and any safety issues raised. The Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) of Hong Kong has provided this update.
