What happened
On February 1, 2020, at 16:15 UTC, a Piper PA-32-300, registration YV2553, was performing a local flight from Higuerote National Airport (SVHG) in Miranda State. The aircraft was returning from a search and rescue (SAR) support mission with one person on board and 90 lbs of fuel remaining.
During the landing phase on runway 08, the aircraft performed a short landing that resulted in the aircraft exiting onto the grass area. There were no injuries to the pilot and the aircraft sustained no damage.
The investigation
The JIAAC investigation included interviews with the pilot and the air traffic controller on duty, as well as a review of all relevant documentation and flight logs. Investigators also performed photographic documentation of the aircraft and the site of the occurrence. At the time of the event, the aircraft held a valid airworthiness certificate issued by the FAA, and maintenance records indicated the aircraft was in an airworthy condition. The pilot held a valid commercial pilot license and medical certificate, with 1,400 hours of experience specifically in the Piper PA-32-300.
Findings
- The primary cause of the incident was a short landing on runway 08.
