What happened
On August 17, 2025, at 15:30 UTC, a Douglas DC-9-82, registration YV3499, operated by RUTAS AEREAS DE VENEZUELA S.A (RAVSA), was performing a takeoff roll from Maiquetía International Airport (SVMI) bound for Margarita. The aircraft was carrying 150 passengers and 9 crew members.
During the takeoff roll, the flight crew heard a loud noise originating from the right engine, which was identified as an engine compressor stall. Following established procedures in the Quick Reference Handbook (QRH), the crew immediately aborted the takeoff. The aircraft successfully returned to the apron without further incident. There were no injuries to the passengers or crew, and the aircraft sustained only minor damage.
The investigation
The investigation involved interviews with the flight crew and a review of all relevant documentation, including pilot licenses, medical certificates, flight logs, and maintenance records. Investigators also examined the aircraft's airworthiness certificate and insurance status, both of which were found to be valid at the time of the event.
Technical inspections included troubleshooting according to the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) and a borescope inspection. The investigation focused on the engine components to identify the source of the compressor stall.
